There’s a saying we all grew up with — it takes a village to raise a child — and most of us quietly filed it under “things that were true once.”

 This workshop argues it’s still true. We just stopped organising for it. Putika Village is a community-led early learning model being built in Kenya, rooted in the idea that African communities already carry the knowledge, the relationships, and the rhythm needed to raise children well. We don’t need to import a system. We need to recognise what we have and give it a structure that travels. Come ready to think about the community you grew up in, what it knew, and what it would take to revive it — not as nostalgia, but as a practical act of design. You’ll leave with a clearer sense of what building together actually looks like, and why the village never really left.
